Lymphedema is a chronic condition that affects the limbs of the body due to the retention and accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the interstitial spaces and other tissues which result from any abnormality, disturbance or obstruction of the lymphatic system.
Lymphedema is known to most commonly affect women, especially those that have undergone breast cancer surgery involving the removal of Axillary nodes, followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. It is also a known fact that lymphedema is incurable, and there may be certain techniques and ways of suppressing some of the symptoms, but there is no definite treatment for the complete elimination of the disease and its symptoms from the body. It is for this reason that many health and lymphedema experts discourage surgical procedures and their involvement in curing lymphedema because there are many risk factors present.
Significant reduction in the swelling associated to lymphedema has been achieved by various methods and techniques that can be practiced by the patients once the disease has been diagnosed. There are different home remedies for lymphedema that have produced outstanding and effective results in restoring the normal movement and function of the limbs, as well as suppressing the swelling and edema significantly.

- One of the easiest of all home remedies for lymphedema is compression. Compression has produced significant results in controlling and suppressing swelling and edema. This compression can be achieved by wearing compression and pressure garments that have been made out of specialized elastic material and provide the necessary pressure to the affected limbs. There are different types of these garments present, such as compression sleeves, stockings, bandages, wraps etc.
- Manual lymph drainage and massages can also be practiced at home with the help of another individual. These are aimed at easing all the excess lymph from the tissues in order to regulate normal lymphatic flow, as well as providing compression, pressure and relief to the affected regions of the body. Massages are ideal for significant reduction in lymphedema swelling.
- Exercises are once again, one of the easiest ways of achieving positive results at home. All one needs is a pair of basic weights for weight lifting exercises, and a combination of stretching and elevation exercises that boost the normal function and movement of the limbs, which gets affected as a result of lymphedema. Many experts also recommend swimming as the best exercise for reducing swelling and edema, and regulating normal functions of the limbs.
- It is important to remember that none of the exercised must be strenuous. Keeping the limbs safe from any cuts, bruises, animal and insect bites, burns, trauma, infection, injury etc is also very important. Maintain good personal hygiene is also essential in order to stay safe from various bacterial and viral infections which may invade the system as a result of lymphedema development.
- Regular intake of a balanced diet is also extremely important in producing positive results.
